Air Freight from China to the UAE and Saudi Arabia in October 2026: Capacity, Transit Times and Rates

Who flies cargo from China to Dubai, Riyadh and Jeddah after the 2026 Gulf airspace closures, what capacity and rates look like in September and October, what the 8 October attack on Riyadh airport changed, and how chargeable weight is counted.

TL;DR

  • Gulf airlines are back, with limits. Emirates SkyCargo has taken freighter bookings since 5 March 2026, except for Class 1 dangerous goods. Etihad returned to its planned Shanghai capacity of about 840 tonnes a week on 1 October. Qatar Airways Cargo still flies approved corridors.
  • Capacity is close to normal, not normal. WorldACD put Gulf capacity 7 percent below a year earlier in September, against 62 percent below in March. Capacity from the Gulf towards Asia Pacific was about 21 percent below pre-conflict levels in mid-September.
  • Rates settled higher. Average rates to and from the Gulf were USD 3.14 per kg in September, up 57 percent on a year earlier and about 20 percent below April. Jet fuel cost 108 percent more than a year earlier at the start of October, which keeps a floor under rates.
  • Riyadh is the new risk. A Houthi missile strike hit Riyadh airport on 8 October. It reopened the same day, but outbound capacity fell 34 percent within 24 hours.
  • Check the divisor. Airlines count volume at 6,000 cubic centimetres per kg, express couriers at 5,000. On light, bulky cargo the difference is 20 percent of the bill.

The rates are airport-to-airport market averages. A door-to-door price adds pickup in China, export handling, customs clearance, duty, VAT and delivery, which is why all-in rates per kilogram are higher than the index.

Riyadh after 8 October

Houthi missiles hit King Khalid International Airport on 8 October, killing three people and damaging a Saudia aircraft. Operations resumed the same day. Rotate data quoted by The Loadstar showed outbound freighter and widebody capacity from Riyadh down 34 percent within 24 hours to 848 tonnes, Lufthansa and Air India suspended flights, and Najran and Jazan airports were closed until 15 October.

For importers in Riyadh the practical effect is fewer direct options in the coming weeks. Ask whether the booking flies into Riyadh, into Dammam or Jeddah with a truck leg, or into Dubai with a road connection, and plan a few days of buffer for peak-season stock.

Transit times and what adds days

Public route guides list about 6 to 10 days from Shenzhen to Dubai for consolidated air freight and 3 to 6 days by express, pickup to delivery. In practice the days go on three things: waiting for space on the first flight, transit through a hub when there is no direct freighter, and clearance on arrival.

Clearance is quick when the paperwork is right. Saudi Arabia targets a two-hour decision on inspection after the declaration and accepts documents 72 hours before arrival. Missing conformity documents, such as a SABER certificate in Saudi Arabia or registration of a regulated product in the UAE, cost more time than the flight. Goods with batteries follow separate rules and services; see our guide to shipping lithium batteries to the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Chargeable weight: 6,000 or 5,000

Air cargo is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Under the IATA rules for airline cargo a shipment is charged by volume once it takes more than 6,000 cubic centimetres per kilogram. Express couriers use a smaller divisor; DHL Express divides by 5,000.

Example: one carton of 60 × 50 × 40 cm weighing 18 kg.

DivisorVolumetric weightCharged as
6,000120,000 ÷ 6,000 = 20 kg20 kg
5,000120,000 ÷ 5,000 = 24 kg24 kg

Heavy, dense goods such as tools are charged on actual weight either way. For light, bulky goods such as clothing or plastic homeware, the divisor in the quote matters as much as the rate per kilogram, so compare both.

Air or sea right now

  • Under about 45 kg chargeable, or when stock is needed within two weeks: air. Sea consolidation bills a minimum of 1 CBM and, with the current detours, takes six to seven weeks to a door in Dubai.
  • Steady replenishment: sea, planned six to eight weeks ahead. Our Hormuz update for October 2026 and Saudi Arabia guide explain the current sea routes.
  • Seasonal stock: Chinese New Year 2027 falls two days before the expected start of Ramadan, so factories close just when Gulf retailers need Ramadan stock. Our Chinese New Year and Ramadan 2027 calendar sets out the order dates.

Peak season outlook

Golden Week ran from 1 to 7 October. The Baltic Air Freight Index rose 5 percent in the week to 5 October and was 25.5 percent above a year earlier. Forecasts for the fourth quarter disagree: Xeneta sees no sign of a strong peak, while Cathay Cargo expects one and names capacity as the main challenge. Both agree that fuel keeps rates from falling far.

How Cargix ships by air

We receive the cargo at our warehouse in Foshan, weigh and measure it, and send it with the line’s consolidated air service: 6 to 9 days door to door to Dubai and Sharjah and 7 to 10 days to the other emirates, with duty and VAT included in the price. The volumetric divisor is 6,000. Rates by weight band are on our air freight page, and the calculator shows air and sea side by side for your weight and volume.

Frequently asked questions

Are Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad flying cargo from China again? +
Yes. Emirates SkyCargo reopened freighter bookings on 5 March 2026, except for Class 1 dangerous goods. Etihad Cargo restarted limited flights on 6 March and from 1 October 2026 offers about 840 tonnes a week from Shanghai. Qatar Airways Cargo restarted Doha freighters on 21 March and still flies approved corridors.
How long does air freight from China to Dubai take in 2026? +
Public route guides list about 6 to 10 days door to door for consolidated air freight from Shenzhen to Dubai and 3 to 6 days by express. Our standard line runs 6 to 9 days to Dubai and Sharjah, 7 to 10 days to the other emirates and about 7 to 10 days to Saudi Arabia.
How much does air freight from China to the Gulf cost now? +
WorldACD put average rates to and from the Gulf at USD 3.14 per kg in September 2026, 57 percent above a year earlier and about 20 percent below April. These are airport-to-airport averages; customs clearance, duty, VAT and delivery come on top.
What happened at Riyadh airport in October 2026? +
On 8 October 2026 Houthi missiles hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, killing three people and damaging a Saudia aircraft. The airport reopened the same day, but outbound freighter and widebody capacity from Riyadh fell 34 percent within 24 hours and some foreign airlines suspended flights.
What volumetric divisor is used for air freight? +
The IATA standard for airline cargo charges by volume when a shipment takes more than 6,000 cubic centimetres per kilogram, so length times width times height in centimetres is divided by 6,000. Express couriers such as DHL divide by 5,000, which makes the same carton 20 percent heavier on the bill.
